Augustinergasse goes from St Peterhofstatt to Bahnhofstrasse. It is named after the Augustinian monastery that used to exist there.
The text on the wall is Swiss German from Bern; it was written by Kurt Marti. Attempt at translation:
where would we end up
if everyone said
where we would end up
and no one ever went
to take a look even once
to where we would end up
if we did go
Text translates to: "Roter Löwe (Red Lion) - This medieval house belonged to the Augustinian monastery in the 14th century. It was renovated in the first half of the 18th century and the façade was redesigned with high windows, the bay window and the cartouche with the house name. In 1921, the ground floor got its current appearance with the addition of a shop with three arches.
Protected building since 1988".
On the left side, the coral building with the red oriel window is the aforementioned Roter Löwe.
"Zunft zum Widder" - the butcher guild
Text translates to: "Pharmacist Christoph Locher (1805-1860) had a residential building built here in place of an old extension to the 'Roten Löwen'. The new building, with its façade representative of late classicism, hosted a pharmacy and a laboratory on the ground floor.
The building was given its current aspect in 1877 when master butcher Theodor Kuser (1845-1906) converted it to a butcher shop.
In 1919, the butchers Niedermann built the adjacent warehouse on the west side in place of a washhouse and a shed.
Protected building since 1988".
